1) What is a sports concussion in the Young Athlete?
A concussion is defined as a trauma to the head, neck, shoulder, or chest that results in an injury to the brain. The majority of head traumas do not result in a concussion. There must be an altered mental status, which means feeling foggy or confused. An athlete may have sustained a head injury, with a headache, but may not have a concussion.
2) What causes a concussion?
The pathophysiology of concussion is not well known. It is believed to be a neurovascular injury to the supply to the brain.
3) Is there a difference between youth vs an adult?
The definition of a concussion is the same regardless of age. Children recover more quickly than adults for fractures and cancers. However, when children suffer from concussions, they take longer to recover than adults. This is because their childhood brain is disorganized and undergoing growth and neuronal connections. Approximately 60% of concussions in children will recover in 14 days or less. However, 10 to 15% of children who suffer a concussion will have symptoms for more than a month.
4) Is there a difference in a concussion for a young athlete vs a non-athlete?
Concussion symptoms are unique to the individual. There is no known difference between athletes and non-athletes. However, a non-athlete, once he/she is symptom-free, can resume normal activity. An athlete who participates in competitive sports must go through a step-by-step progression in order to return to play. The protocol is:
Step 1) 20-30 minutes of biking
Step 2) 20-30 minutes of running and biking
Step 3) Running, sprints, pushups, sit-ups, lunges, squats, burpees
Step 4) Non-Contact practice
Step 5) Contact practice
5) What Should I do if I think my child has a concussion?
The first thing to do is to stop all physical activity. Your child should visit a healthcare provider within 24 hours. The best physician to see is someone who is familiar with sports, and who sees many concussions in young athletes.
6) How long does it take to recover?
The majority of concussions in young athletes take 14 days or less to recover. 10 to 15% of children who suffer from concussions take longer than one month to recover.
7) How does ADHD affect recovery?
Children who have an attention deficit disorder or previous history of concussion or migraine headaches might take longer to recover.
8) What about school?
Your child should go in late, the day after the concussion, or not go at all on the first day.
